7 Lessons We Can All Learn From Going in Style

05 Apr 2017

Whoever said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks had clearly never met Willie, Joe and Al. In the new heist comedy Going in Style, directed by Zach Braff, three retirees decide to rob a bank after their pensions get cut and funds are low, teaching us all a few tips and tricks about making the most of life. Here are a few of our favourites…

Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin in Going In Style

Surround yourself with good friends

Willie (Morgan Freeman), Joe (Michael Caine) and Al (Alan Arkin) have fallen on some seriously hard times, but at the end of the day they’ve always got their solid friendship to keep them going. These guys have each other’s back through thick and thin, what more could you ask for?

Never lose sight of your values

This might seem odd seeing as this is a film about a bank robbery, but it’s these three friends’ sense of justice and responsibility to their families that ultimately leads them to break the law. In spite of everything they never lose their sense of community and giving, and they’re always on best behaviour.

Keep a sense of humour

Sounds simple, right? In dark times finding a little humour can be the brightest light of all, whether it’s with friends, family or by yourself. This is something that Willie, Joe and Al have got down to a tee, and we could all take a lesson from.

Don’t be greedy

Make no mistake – these pensioners aren’t robbing a bank because they want to zip off to the Bahamas to spend their retirement in luxury and sunshine. What we have here is your classic Robin Hood scenario. The men just want to take care of their families and their own wellbeing as their pensions go south. Give them a round of applause.

You’re never too old to fall in love

Going in Style teaches us that love doesn’t have an expiration date. Even if it happens with a slightly overbearing grocery store attendant, played by the ever-funny Ann-Margret, you’re never too old to try something new in the love stakes.

Always have hobbies

Hobbies keep us sane, especially when things in our personal lives get trying. Some people have knitting, others have football. The men of Going in Style have The Bachelor, a series which brings the buddies together time and time again.

Keep in touch with today’s trends

Even though trends have a tendency to change on a dime, trying to keep a handle on what’s in style these days helps keep us all in the know. It especially helps Willie, Joe and Al to stay young at heart. Although nothing, it seems, could help these men figure out how to use a touch screen phone.

What do you and your friends get up to in a bid to stay young?
