Our Top 5 Movie Assassins

10 Nov 2016

While we all have our favourite genres when it comes to movies, audiences around the world have shown their love for high-octane thrillers time and time again. The role of the assassin is a key ingredient in these films, bringing guaranteed suspense and adrenaline. Here are our top five in recent memory…

Christian Wolff (The Accountant)

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a math-savvy accountant who has more of an affinity for numbers than people, which might make you wonder why he features on this list. However, behind all of the complex calculations lays a trained killer who cooks the books for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organisations. When the numbers catch up to Wolff, he’s the one left to balance the equation.

John Wick (John Wick)

The only thing more exciting than watching a professional hitman go about their work is watching a retired one make a return for one last roll of the dice. In John Wick, an aging assassin is forced to draw for his weapons one last time after his car is stolen by a Mob Boss he thought was history, forcing him back into a life he thought he’d long left behind. Keanu Reeves is set to return as the now legendary assassin in John Wick: Chapter 2, released February 2017.

Deadshot (Suicide Squad)

Will Smith is one of those actors that has a knack for always being likeable, even when he’s playing a contract killer. In Suicide Squad, he takes on one of the most enduring assassin archetypes – those who are just trying to pay the bills. Deadshot is clearly at odds with what he does for a living and has an inner desperation to be a good father, making his appearance in this year’s summer hit all the more gripping.

Napoleon Solo (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.)

There are various stereotypes for the government assassin. At one end of the spectrum we find the silent G-Men, who come and go like a shadow in the night. At the other end is Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill). Napoleon sees no contradiction between performing top secret jobs and making himself the centre of attention. He’s an assassin who travels to stylish destinations and is introduced to some of the most beautiful women in the world along the way. If he has to thwart a terrorist attack while he’s there, it’s all just part of the job.

The Man From UNCLE

Jimmy Conlon (Run All Night)

In Run All Night we’re introduced to Jimmy “The Gravedigger” Conlon, played by the captivating Liam Neeson. Unlike most of the people on this list, Jimmy doesn’t glow with pride when he looks at his CV. He’s done bad things and knows he’s a bad man, telling himself that when the time comes for just desserts he’ll accept them quietly. Jimmy soon discovers that his family drive him more than money or the next kill – and that’s when this hired killer has a chance to become an actual hero.
