There’s nothing better than seeing your favourite page-turner on the big screen. Whether you’re love-struck or heart-broken a romantic film can reaffirm your faith in the power of love and lift those spirits high. Here are four of our favourite romantic movies based on novels that we can’t help falling in love with time and again.
Me Before You
Oftentimes you find love where you least expect it. Sometimes it takes you where you never expected to go…
Based on the critically acclaimed, bestselling novel by Jojo Moyes, “Me Before You” stars Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. Louisa “Lou” Clark (Clarke) lives in a quaint town in the English countryside. With no clear direction in her life, the quirky and creative 26-year-old goes from one job to the next in order to help her tight-knit family make ends meet. Her normally cheery outlook is put to the test, however, when she faces her newest career challenge. Taking a job at the local “castle,” she becomes caregiver and companion to Will Traynor (Claflin), a wealthy young banker who became wheelchair bound in an accident two years prior, and whose whole world changed dramatically in the blink of an eye. No longer the adventurous soul he once was, the now cynical Will has all but given up. That is until Lou determines to show him that life is worth living. Embarking together on a series of adventures, both Lou and Will get more than they bargained for, and find their lives—and hearts—changing in ways neither one could have imagined.
If I Stay
It’s love at first sound for Mia (Chloë Grace Moretz) and Adam (Jamie Blackley) who, despite being extremely different, both live and breathe music. Creating a passionate bond between them, they fall in love hard and fast. When a tragedy occurs, Mia is faced with the impossible choice of whether to stay (in this life) or go (to the next). Based on Gayle Forman’s bestselling novel, If I Stay reminds us that life can change in an instant, and Mia’s inevitable struggle with love, hope and tragedy brings out the strengths and weaknesses of love that we all experience. A moving, beautiful movie that shows the choices we make because of love can alter everything.
We all remember our first crush. That moment we laid eyes on a member of the opposite sex we didn’t find repulsive. When second-graders Bryce and Juli first meet, Juli knows it’s love. Although Bryce isn’t so sure. This coming-of-age romantic comedy set in the 1950s is steeped in nostalgia. Based on the novel by renowned author Wendelin Van Draanen, Flipped is a heart-warming tale of young love. Taking us on a journey from Grade School to Junior High, through triumph and disaster, family drama and first love, Juli and Bryce make discoveries that will define who they are – and who they are to each other. An irresistible portrayal of the heartache brought to young hearts, this film reminds us that love has never been easy, but it’s totally worth it.
The Lucky One
Do you believe in destiny? The Lucky One, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks (author of The Notebook) challenges the age-old question of whether things ever really happen by accident or whether fate is shadowing our movements. Logan, (Zac Efron) a marine fighting in Iraq, finds a photograph of a woman (Taylor Schilling) buried in the sand that he begins to see as his lucky charm. What follows is a powerful story of two people’s struggle to piece together whether or not love is destiny. This incredibly romantic movie, full of heart, takes us on a moving journey of discovery and healing. If you’re ever in need of reassurance that love conquers all, then snuggle up with The Lucky One.
