Double Take: The LEGO Batman Movie & The LEGO Movie 2
Bricksburg to Gotham to Apocalypseburg, find out how Batman’s story continues in The LEGO Movie 2.
LEGO® has never gone out of fashion, and neither have caped crusaders. We all know and love The LEGO® Batman Movie, but did you know the Dark Knight features in not only The LEGO® Movie but also it’s equally as entertaining sequel, The LEGO® Movie 2: The Second Part?
In celebration of LEGO® Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight video game being released, we take a look at Batman’s past bricky adventures for this Double Take edition.
The LEGO® Batman Movie (2017)

What is the plot of The LEGO® Batman Movie?
In the irreverent spirit of fun that made The LEGO® Movie a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble - LEGO Batman (Will Arnett) - stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker's (Zach Galifianakis) hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Why We Love The LEGO® Batman Movie
This film unites two of the world’s most beloved IPs: LEGO® and DC. By combining the two, you can’t get much more epic action (with smaller bricky dimensions) than this.

Batman is presented in a whole new light; when he is not fighting crime he has to face his fear of letting people into his life again, as we see how lonely the masked vigilante’s free time has become when Gotham doesn’t need him. A wonderfully emotional arc, set against the iconic LEGO humour we’ve come to know and love, Batman forms unlikely alliances, exciting new enemies, and delivers an exceptional example of the found family trope.

Additionally, we love how this film reconstructs the relationship between Batman and the Joker as a breakup in a hilariously refreshing take on their typical dynamic, and one that can only be done justice in LEGO format.

Accompanied by a stacked cast, including Will Arnett (Batman), Ralph Fiennes (Alfred), Zach Galifanakis (Joker), Michael Cera (Robin) and even Mariah Carey (Mayor Mcaskill), The LEGO® Batman Movie is a great ride from start to finish; effortlessly funny and effortlessly epic.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)
What is the plot of The LEGO® Movie 2: The Second Part?
The much-anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed, global box-office phenomenon that started it all, The LEGO® Movie 2: The Second Part reunites the heroes of Bricksburg in an all-new action-packed adventure to save their beloved city.
It's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are now facing a huge new threat: LEGO DUPLO® invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than it can be rebuilt. The battle to defeat the invaders and restore harmony to the LEGO universe will take Emmet, Lucy, Batman and their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds, including a galaxy filled with fantastic planets, strange characters and catchy new songs. It will test their courage, creativity and Master Building skills, and reveal just how special they really are.

Why We Love The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

Everything may no longer be awesome in Bricksburg due to LEGO DUPLO®’s attack, but that doesn’t stop the team we love from the first LEGO movie bringing their fiercely funny energy to this fantastic sequel. We love that the signature LEGO humour is back, as immediately indicated by the movie’s very imaginative title for a sequel…

Five years after the disastrous events of Taco Tuesday, our happy-go-lucky characters have been hardened by the new harsh landscape of Apocalypse-Burg that resembles a parodied, Mad-Max-esque world. Nevertheless, life can throw what it may at sunny protagonist Emmet, but our favourite master builder remains as positive as ever.

All the best characters from the first LEGO movie make a return including Emmet, Wyldstyle, Benny, Unikitty, Metalbeard and of course, Batman, with some fun newcomers like time traveller Rex Dangervest (like Emmet, voiced by Chris Pratt), space pilot General Star Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz), alien Queen Watevra (Tiffany Haddish) and even a Bruce Willis cameo as himself!
What is similar about The LEGO® Batman Movie and The LEGO® Movie 2: The Second Part?

Aside from the glaringly obvious LEGO connection, Batman stars in both films with Will Arnett voicing the legendary hero. Our Dark Knight returns in the postapocalyptic landscape in The LEGO® Movie 2: The Second Part, and it is revealed that the story takes place after the events of The LEGO® Batman Movie, nicely linking the timelines. Even in the prologue of the former, the LEGO Justice League references Batman is ‘off on a stand-alone adventure’ AKA his own movie, to explain his initial absence.

For both films, friendships and family matter above all else. Batman may try to appear like the emotionless ‘night-stalking, crime-fighting vigilante’ he claims to be, needless of relations but his story and the people he meets along the way, as well as musing on his relation with the Joker, will prove him otherwise. Similarly for our protagonist Emmet, as he must team up with the rugged adventurer Rex Dangervest to save his closes friends from Armageddon, he must learn that friends are more important than being someone who he is not.
What is different about The LEGO® Batman Movie and The LEGO® Movie 2: The Second Part?
As Batman’s archnemesis, the Joker serves as The LEGO® Batman Movie’s comical antagonist. For The LEGO® Movie 2, Bricksburg/Apocalypseburg’s biggest threat is DUPLO as hinted at from the first LEGO movie - and the once seemingly harmless young kids’ toy can be very destructive in this film!
The LEGO® Batman Movie reintroduces the iconic DC characters you have known and loved for decades in an entirely new light whereas The LEGO® Movie 2 meets new villains, new heroes and everyone in between, for our favourite Master Builders.

For The LEGO® Movie 2, the importance of loving who you are is a central theme, as Emmet compares himself to the vastly opposite Rex Dangervest, a tough brooding character that couldn’t be more different to the optimistic, caring character that Emmet is. Differently, it is the love of others that Batman needs to let into his life and learn to open up again to those who care about him.
