October Film Club - The Exorcist
Test your knowledge of this demonic thriller with our The Exorcist Film Club Quiz!
About The Exorcist
After Regan (Linda Blair), the daughter of successful actress Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), finds an old Ouija board lying about the house, marked changes in her personality start to take place. Despite her mother’s best efforts to convince doctors that these changes are verging on the paranormal, Regan is still subject to ineffective tests, medication, and confinement.
Regan needs a stronger kind of medicine – an exorcism.
Chris MacNeil, distraught by the hopelessness of traditional medicine, enlists the help of priests Damien Karras (Jason Miller) and Lankester Merrin (Max von Sydow) to perform the act. The Bible is obtained, the Holy Water is sourced, and the priests are prepped. The scene is set for an exorcism.
The film was hugely successful with final worldwide gross takings of $441.3m. It also earned acclaim during awards season with 10 academy award nominations including Best Director, Best Picture and individual nominations for Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, and Jason Miller. The Exorcist completely revolutionised the horror genre and set a precedent upon which numerous modern-day horrors have followed, like Gerard Johnstone’s M3gan (2022) or Gore Verbinski’s Ring (2003). It brought the supernatural into every-day life, making it more relatable for audiences, whilst challenging society’s pre-conception that traditional medicine is infallible.
The Exorcist was pivotal in horror, standing the test of time and remaining one of the most influential films to be made. Now you can rewatch the film in 4K and marvel at how 50 years have passed since Chris MacNeil was first pushed to her wit’s end to save her ravaged daughter from the clutches of a demonic being.

About The Dark Knight
Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan reunite following their blockbuster success with Batman Begins! This time, Heath Ledger joins the cast as The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart stars as Harvey Dent in an all-new adventure of The Dark Knight.
With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and new district attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart--Thank You for Smoking), Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham City forever. The three enjoy early success, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Ledger--Brokeback Mountain), who throws Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman ever closer to crossing the line between hero and vigilante.

The Dark Knight is fundamentally a story of good versus evil intertwined with a healthy degree of car chases, fancy weapons, and criminals. It has been 15 years since the film was first released and it will remain synonymous with the Batman franchise for many more years to come.

August Film Club - Enter the Dragon
Test your knowledge of this Bruce Lee classic with our Enter The Dragon film quiz!
About Enter the Dragon
Starring combat legend Bruce Lee, Enter the Dragon is widely regarded as one of the greatest action films of all time, successfully standing the test of time due to its undeniable influence on the wider action and thriller genres and persisting prevalence in cultural conversation. The plot follows Lee, a master Shaolin instructor heading a dojo of devoted young acolytes in Hong Kong, who is approached by a British Intelligence agent investigating a suspected opium crime lord, Han. Lee is persuaded to infiltrate a prestigious martial arts competition Hans is holding on his private island, in order to collect evidence of Han’s involvement in trafficking narcotics and prostitution. Before he departs for the tournament, Lee learns an unsavoury fact: that the man who killed his sister is operating as Han’s personal bodyguard on the island. Setting off from Hong Kong, Lee resolves to seek not just evidence, but vengeance for his sister.
Revisiting Enter the Dragon today shows it’s so much more than a simple, formulaic kung-fu flick, as the film marries the class and precision of martial arts, propulsion of modern Hollywood action and the Blaxploitation genre. The tone of the zeitgeist was also referenced throughout the film through the characters of John Saxon’s Roper and Jim Kelly’s Williams, who were both portrayed as veterans of the then ongoing Vietnam war. As a result, when it arrived on the Western screen, Hollywood’s expectations of what action cinema could be were blown apart!
Enter the Dragon was also a commercial phenomenon, becoming a staple in Western cinemas across the 70s and 80s. Against a budget of $850,000, it’s made $400m at the global box office which, when adjusting for inflation, is the equivalent of $2bn today and over 400 times its budget-- making it one of the most profitable films ever! Enter the Dragon’s legacy was institutionally solidified in 2004, when the United States National Film Registry selected the film for preservation due to its historical and cultural significance. Sadly, Bruce Lee never lived to see the global success of the film that would make him an inter-generational icon, as it released one month after his tragic death at the age of thirty-two. Yet, his legacy lives on through Enter the Dragon, a testament to his ability to bridge East and West, break Asian stereotypes, and find beauty in the discipline of martial arts.

July Film Club - The Conjuring
Test your knowledge of this classic horror with our The Conjuring film quiz!
About The Conjuring
Set in 1971, The Conjuring follows the Perron family-- Roger and Carolyn and their five daughters--as they move into an idyllic farmhouse in Rhode Island, optimistic and elated at the promise of a fresh start in the countryside. Following the formula of a number of classic horror monoliths, paranormal events begin to occur with increasingly disturbing progress within the home, with the Perron’s soon realising the hateful entity plaguing their home means to harm them. They seek out the paranormal investigating duo Ed and Lorraine Warren, who soon find themselves sucked into the dark history of the house, coming face to face with the malevolent shadow plaguing the land and fighting for the very souls of the Perron family.
One of the most refreshing aspects of The Conjuring which solidifies its status as a modern cult classic is Wan’s ability to take traditional tropes and formulas horror fans are well versed with and make them fresh and new again. The Conjuring utilises almost utmost silence to build agonising tension, as the audience can hear every minute creak in the floorboards, brush of fabric and rattling breath before the senses are overwhelmed by histrionically shocking music intended to curdle the blood. Using mostly practical effects, the farmhouse is set up like a cinematic funhouse ride full of jolts and scares reminiscent of 70’s classics such as Amityville Horror and The Exorcist. This obvious influence forms an ironically cinematic Möbius strip, as it was the real-life Ed and Lorraine Warren’s experiences which inspired The Amityville Horror story to begin with!
The Conjuring is a crown jewel in the contemporary horror genre, affirmed by its staggering box office of $319.5 million compared to its budget of only $20 million. The film’s depiction of the ageless battle of good vs evil, light vs dark, and the duality of twisted religion and the perseverance of faith is a moving thread interwoven between the jumps and jolts.

June Film Club - Cloud Atlas
Test your knowledge of this ambitiously sprawling Sci-fi with our Cloud Atlas film quiz!
About Cloud Atlas
Adapted from the 2004 novel of the same name by David Mitchell, the project was a collaboration between filmmaker Tom Tykwer and directorial duo the Wachowski sisters, known widely for their successful Matrix anthology. The production had a budget of over $100 million provided by multiple independent sources, securing its spot as one of the most expensive independent films ever produced. This is telling in the sheer size and scope of Cloud Atlas, as the film depicts innumerable versions of our world (and beyond!), enveloping the viewer into bold visuals serving as a backdrop to the enduring theme of human connection across the ripples of time.
The film explores multiple themes still prevalent in cultural conversation over a decade since the project premiered at the 37th Toronto International Film Festival. The cast of cinematic heavy hitters, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Susan Sarandon, play multiple characters across the spanning epochs of earth, provocatively utilising makeup and prosthetics to convey the central themes of reincarnation, interconnection, and the fluidity of sexuality and gender.
Cloud Atlas serves as a warming reminder of the interconnectivity and love which binds humanity as a species to one another, in any variation of landscape, culture or governing body. Tykwer and the Wachowski’s grandiosely adapt to screen Mitchell’s question about a collective consciousness pervading humanity’s history, fuelled by a love for our fellow man which transcends space and time.

May Film Club - The Great Gatsby
Test your knowledge of Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the 1925 literary classic with our The Great Gatsby Quiz!
About The Great Gatsby
The Academy Award winning historical romance boasts a stellar cast of Hollywood royalty, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki, and Tobey Maguire in the pivotal role of Nick Carraway, a would-be writer dabbling in stocks and bonds on Wall Street who befriends the mythic Mr. Gatsby. It is through Nick’s perspective that we are transported from an America teetering on the edge of The Great Depression of 1929 back into 1922, an exorbitant past of opulence and the epicurean pursuit of the heights of hedonism. Upon his arrival in New York, Nick reunites with his cousin Daisy, a beautiful yet fickle woman who has desensitised herself with material luxuries to cope with her loveless marriage and powerless station in the world. Her old money husband, Tom Buchanan, swiftly moves to draw Nick into his salacious and sordid affairs in the inner city, showcasing the debauchery and self-indulgence which colours the era. Not long after his arrival in New York, Nick learns the name on the tip of everyone’s tongue, Mr. Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire who throws lavish and decadent parties and conveniently lives right next door to our narrator. It is Nick Carraway who will bridge the gap between Mr. Gatsby and the prize he desires just beyond his reach, a catalyst who will facilitate a reunion destined for tragedy.
The film’s relationship with the performance of wealth evolves over its course, as the gleaming silvers, golds and vivid colours which define the optimistic beginning pale and dwindle as Gatsby’s charade begins to devolve and the austerity of the economic crash looms. The influence of the thoroughly modern soundtrack featuring Beyonce, Jay-Z, Florence and the Machine and Lana Del Rey, to name a select few, situates the source material closer to home, successfully ensuring the accessibility of a cautionary tale and contemporary critique of the American Dream.

April Film Club - The Girl with All the Gifts
Test your knowledge of this dystopian, sci-fi with our, The Girl with All the Gifts quiz!
About The Girl with All the Gifts
Written and adapted for the screen by Mike Carey from his book of the same name, the film takes place in the near distant future, where a fungal cordyceps virus has decimated the British population and reduced countless to fast, violent zombies coined “hungries” by the remaining survivors. We follow the story of Melanie, a young girl held at an army base outside of London, where she is educated by Miss Justineau and is experimented on by Dr. Caroline Caldwell, who is searching for a vaccine. We learn that the virus in a small group of second generation infected has evolved, resulting in children like Melanie (Neonates) who crave living flesh, whilst retaining the ability to learn, think and “present” as human. When the base is breached by the hordes of infected, Melanie and her beloved teacher Miss Justineau, Dr. Caldwell, stern Sergeant Eddie Parks and his remaining Private, Kieran Gallagher, flee towards London in the hopes of reaching an alternate base in Beacon. As they sweep through the desecrated streets of London in a deliberately paced and eerily tense manner, the climax of the film poses deeply philosophical questions about the cost of humanity’s endurance- who deserves the chance to thrive, and who is qualified to make that decision. As we are struck by the bleak tone and the sombre visuals of the collapse of civilisation, we are chillingly told, “It’s not all over, it’s just not yours anymore.”
Nature almost feels like a fully conceptualised character in itself, as we are immersed by visuals of a world in which the natural environment has reclaimed the land. The imagery of the BT Tower, encased in a cocoon of pods carrying the deadly viral spores, is symbolic of the downfall of modern mankind, and the beginning of a new world order. Sennia Nanua in the role of Melanie succeeds in enticing the viewer to root for her whilst simultaneously keeping them on edge, her performance inspiring a sense of uncanny valley as we witness and feel for an individual who looks and acts human but feels like something entirely different. A British gem that is an equally horrifying and deeply moving story about humanity which doesn’t scrimp on the gory scares, The Girl with All the Gifts is not to be missed.

March Film Club - Pacific Rim
Test your knowledge of this action-filled sci-fi with our Pacific Rim quiz!
About Pacific Rim
In the year 2013, monstrous creatures called Kaiju begin to emerge from an interdimensional portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, wreaking destruction and death upon the neighbouring coastal cities. In response, humanity bands together to fight off the alien attackers by creating mecha giants named Jaegers, capable of engaging with the Kaiju in combat. The immensity of the Jaegers requires co-pilots who must share a mental link called “Drifting”, in order to share the mental load of piloting the machine. After years of loss and carnage, world leaders liquidate the Jaegar programme in favour of erecting giant walls to preserve what little is left of the Pacific coastline, and the remaining Jaeger’s are relocated to Hong Kong under the observation of Marshal Stacker Pentecost. With the aid of his adoptive daughter, Mako Mori, Pentecost formulates a plan to destroy the portal once and for all, bringing in washed-up ex-pilot Raleigh Beckett and Kaiju experts Dr. Newton Geiszler and Hermann Gottlieb to attack the Kaiju at their source and save the world.
We witness a world united in a common goal and multiple examples of the touching power of familial bonds. Charlie Hunnam gives a down-to-earth and relatable performance in the role of Raleigh Beckett, whilst the dynamic between Idris Elba’s portrayal of Pentecost and Rinko Kikuchi’s Mori is a movingly endearing anchor in the midst of the chaotic action. Charlie Day and Burn Gorman punctuate the drama with their humorously witty back-and-forth criticism of one another as they race against the clock to decipher the hidden intentions of the Kaiju. Overall, Del Toro smashes it out of the park with a beloved action-packed extravaganza with an equal amount of heart.

February Film Club - Training Day
Test your knowledge of this award-winning gritty cop drama with our Training Day quiz!
About Training Day
Set over the course of a single day, veteran LAPD officer Alonzo Harris takes ambitious rookie Jake Hoyt under his wing during his first day on the beat. Working within the inner-city narcotics unit, fresh-faced and eager Jake quickly establishes some disconcerting truths about his new partner and the unethical manner in which he pursues and delivers justice. Jake quickly finds himself in over his head as Alonzo drags him down into the murky depths of his corrupt dealings, manipulating and abusing the law for his own personal gain. The situation soon becomes vicious as the two men begin to clash over one another’s personal ideologies, posing the question of where the metaphorical line should be drawn in the fight against crime. If a man believes that his pursuit of righteousness positions him above the law, at which point does he become that which he seeks to bring to justice?
The brutally high stakes of this ferociously intense action-drama are amplified by the on-screen relationship between Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Washington’s villainous yet intoxicatingly charismatic Alonzo dominates the screen, as he abuses his protégé’s naivety with brutal smarts and violent tactics. Hawke’s performance showcasing the evolution of an eager ingenue cornered by corruption to a respected champion of the law gives the viewer an underdog to root for. Definitively, the sizzling tension between Hawk and Washington and the deceit and grime of the LA landscape makes Training Day an unforgettable watch.
