The Nemesis System: Middle Earth’s game-changing mechanic
Thanks to the Nemesis System, revenge has never been sweeter! But what made this unique feature such a gripping part of Shadow of Mordor, and how has it evolved in Shadow of War?
2014’s Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor brought us a new adventure in the epic world of J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings. But it also gave us much more than that. The “Nemesis System” was a revolutionary game mechanic that created an immersive gameplay experience, the likes of which we’d never seen before.
Meet your nemesis
In Shadow of Mordor, the player controls the human ranger Talion, who is bonded to the wraith of an elf lord. Their quest for revenge involves killing orcs, and lots of ‘em!
But there’s more to it than that. Monolith’s innovative AI system allowed the orc hierarchy to evolve dynamically throughout the game in response to the player’s actions. Enemies would also exhibit their own unique personalities, thanks to randomly-generated traits and behaviour patterns. This guaranteed that no two playthroughs would ever be the same.
However, it’s the Nemesis mechanic that everyone remembers, because it really brought Mordor to life. Let an orc murder you, and the brute could earn himself a promotion… and you’d have yourself a grudge match against an increasingly powerful enemy! You could then use the system to track them down and finish the job, but that orc would remember you, and wasn’t afraid to let you know it! After multiple face-offs, those brawls would become extremely personal, and there was nothing more satisfying than that final revenge.
The enemy evolves
The Nemesis System became even more dynamic and complex with the follow-up title, Middle Earth: Shadow of War. Not only could players target and eliminate powerful enemies; they could now recruit “Followers” into their own army, used to attack and conquer the new “Nemesis Fortresses” - vast enemy strongholds that affected the look and landscape, as well as introducing more strategic elements to the game.
The “tribes” system gave the orcs in Shadow of War more character than ever, impacting their abilities, aesthetics and personalities. The sequel also introduced the “Advanced Class” mechanic, allowing orcs to develop personal traits such as Assassin, Beserker or Destroyer.
The Nemesis System truly was a groundbreaking innovation in both gameplay and narrative, letting players forge their own stories with unique characters. In this world, trust us - nothing will be forgotten!
