Taking 4 1/2 years to make (with 3 years in production), they had to invent some of the filmmaking techniques as they went along
As discussed in the clip, space debris is a real threat: "The energy that even small flecks of paint have in orbit means they are like bullets and can cause serious damage. A piece of debris as big as a hand can take out a space shuttle."
