7 of the most iconic movie-inspired Halloween costumes

23 Oct 2017
This Halloween we’re looking to the big screen for costume inspiration.

There’s no doubt movie-based costumes are some of the best ones, and with hundreds and thousands of films out there you’ve got a lot to choose from. Quirky, super hero or totally terrifying, these cinematic outfits are guaranteed to get you noticed on Halloween.

Pennywise the Clown

Not only does IT’s Pennywise sport a clown costume that’s iconic, but it’s positively terrifying too. Those puffy white sleeves and dilapidated ruffles reek of his life prowling the sewers, then throw in his signature red balloon to complete the creep factor. Placed beside his powder white face and whippy red hair, it’s the stuff of nightmares.

Annabelle

The white dress worn by the demonic Annabelle doll in Annabelle: Creation might be unassuming on its own, but couple it with her absolutely chilling porcelain face, and you’ve got a real thriller of a Halloween costume. What makes Annabelle so horrific is that she’s a demon-possessed doll, so her oddly bright eyes and glassy expression make this costume particularly sinister.

Freddy Krueger

Freddy Krueger costumes are staples in the Halloween world – it’s one of those outfits that is instantly recognisable. The Nightmare on Elm Street villain is renowned for his striped jumper and disfigured face, not to mention his right hand which just happens to wield four razor-sharp knives – perfect for terrorising teenagers in their dreams.

The Joker

Over the years the Joker has come in many forms, but for a particularly quirky version we recommend channelling Jared Leto in Suicide Squad. He’s unmissable with slicked back green hair, floor length purple coat, covered in tattoos and a moth that’s filled with metal. It’s a fresh spin on one of our all-time favourite villains.

Wonder Woman

Halloween costumes don’t need to be villainess and malicious. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, who will be seen in next month’s Justice League, is one of the most iconic looks to go with this year. Her updated outfit is fierce and practical, and her weaponry (the lasso of truth is a favourite) makes for some great accessories.

The Grady twins

If you’re going for the creepy factor this Halloween, there’s nothing quite as frightening as the Grady twins from The Shining. You’ll know them as the pair that beckon Danny – played by Danny Lloyd – down the hallway of the Overlook Hotel. They may look innocent in their matching powder-blue dresses, but there’s something ever so sinister lurking underneath those deadpan expressions.

Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn has made a lasting impression since Suicide Squad’s release last year, with the brightly coloured pigtails, sequin hot pants and ‘Daddy’s Lil Monster’ T-shirt all reaching an icon status. Completing the look is a baseball bat and token ‘PUDDIN’ necklace, taking you well on the way to a 10/10 Halloween costume.
