The Disaster Artist does just that, as producer, director and star of the film, James Franco, tells the true story of Tommy Wiseau’s 2003 epic flop The Room. This melodramatic masterpiece has been described as the Citizen Kane of bad movies, giving Franco comedy gold to work with.
It’s not just Franco that’s in the spotlight though, as The Disaster Artist boasts an all-star cast. Before it hits cinemas December 1, here’s a peak at this stellar ensemble.
James FrancoFranco has built a career taking on characters in indie films and big budget blockbusters alike. In The Disaster Artist, he transforms himself into infamous writer, director and star of The Room – Tommy Wiseau. Not only did Franco undergo a major physical transition to look the part, wearing a total of six facial prosthetics every day during filming, but he also made light work of Wiseau’s stand-alone European accent and adopted the voice out of character, too.
Dave FrancoJames’ younger brother stars as Greg Sestero, author of the best-selling book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made. The siblings have never starred in a feature film together and Dave has forged his own path through Hollywood, most recently lending his voice to protagonist Lloyd Garmadon in The LEGO Ninjago Movie. Unsurprisingly, the Franco brothers pull off being unlikely friends Tommy and Greg perfectly.
Comedy veteran Seth Rogen joins as script supervisor Sandy Schklair – The Room’s only crew member with any industry experience, who hilariously struggles to deal with Wiseau’s unorthodox style. Rogen started his career performing stand-up comedy, since becoming a house-hold name with roles in Neighbours, Knocked Up and Observe and Report. His style of dark comedy pairs perfectly with the quirkiness of The Disaster Artist.
Alison Brie joins this star-filled cast to play Amber, the girlfriend who comes between Sestero and Wiseau’s friendship. Brie is best known for her work in the hit sitcom Community and TV drama Mad Men, as well as the films How to Be Single and Get Hard. Brie first discovered The Room when she was working on Community, as the sitcom’s camera operator happened to be the director of photography on Wiseau’s notorious film. Since then she’s been hooked, and it was a nice opportunity to star with her now-husband, Dave Franco!
Cast as Juliette Danielle, the actress who plays the manipulative antagonist Lisa, Ari Graynor is best known for her work in The Sopranos, Fringe and the film For A Good Time, Call… Prior to the production of The Disaster Artist, Graynor watched The Room numerous times to try and get into the mind of her character and to understand more about Tommy Wisaeu’s motives behind the production.
