The Academy Award winning actor Eddie Redmayne has been cast to play the central character of the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, set in the Harry Potter universe.
The actor, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of scientist Stephen Hawking in the 2014 bipoic Theory of Everything, will play magizoologist Newt Scamander, who encountered and documented a myriad of magical creatures on his travels, leading him to pen the textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on which the film is based. J. K. Rowling is making her screenwriting debut, developing the characters she crafted in print to further explore the wizarding world on screen.

David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films and will be directing Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, stated that he believes Eddie is “a fearless actor, brimming with invention, wit and humanity”, and that he and J. K. Rowling couldn’t be more excited at the prospect of working with him.

In an announcement yesterday, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production at Warner Bros. Pictures Greg Silverman said,
“Eddie Redmayne has emerged as one of today’s most extraordinarily talented and acclaimed actors. We are thrilled to welcome him into J. K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, where we know he will deliver a remarkable performance”.

The film is being produced by David Heyman, producer of all eight of the Harry Potter movies; J.K. Rowling; Steve Kloves, who scripted all but one; and Lionel Wigram, who served as an executive producer on the last four installments of the franchise.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is slated for worldwide release in 3D and IMAX on November 18th, 2016.
